Japan has several famous "cat islands," islands known for their cat population that outnumbers the humans who live on the island. One of the best known and most visited is Tashirojima Island, about 250 miles northeast of Tokyo, just off the coast of Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture. It's easily accessible via train (with several transfers) and then a short ferry ride to the island.
